Police in North Carolina has released the identity of an officer who shot a suspect after he was attacked.
Wilson Police Department Officer W.J. Hine is on administrative duty while the NC State Bureau of Investigations reviews the officer-involved shooting, which took place on Tuesday.
Hine and another officer were sitting in their patrol cars when they were approached by 36-year-old Jason Woodell, who came at the lawmen with a hammer.
Hine, acting with officer safety in mind, opened fire, hitting the suspect in the shoulder.
According to WITN, Woodell was taken to the hospital and is currently undergoing a mental health evaluation.
A four-year veteran of the force, Hine’s temporary reassignment is agency protocol. The other officer involved did not seek treatment for his injury.
